ACOUNT SAFETY 101
So, why am I writing a guide to account safety? Simple, there are too many people getting scammed, phished, and cleaned for doing stupid things without a second thought. Yes, to most of you this guide is going to be common sense, but for some this is stuff you need to know if you are gonna continue on botting away. In this guide, I'll cover basic account safety as well as botting safety. If someone comments and says something worthwhile, I'll be adding it to this main post so others will be able to see it.Nobody wants to admit it, but there are countless people on the forums that need to read this -_-. The amount of hacked people I see...
I. Account Safety
1. Recovery Question
This is one of the most basic things to have on your account, and can help show to Jagex's little automatic server that the account is yours. If you buy an account, set these up and sit on the account for awhile, if it doesn't get recovered than it is legit. Its better to be safe than sorry, plus in that time the recovery questions will be set. This doesn't mean use it, but you do want to make sure not to put anything your afraid to lose on it so you don't cry when it gets recovered and cleaned.
2. Bank Pin
A bank pin takes a total of 7 days to remove. So unless your bank pin is something like "0000" it will keep your bank safe. This system was actually created for that reason, since hacking was getting rather common. Within those 7 days, you can recover and transfer your stuff before they get the chance to take the account back again. When it comes to phising, as long as you san your computer and you are safe, then you shouldn't have to worry about getting hacked again and you'll be safe.
3. Email
Plain and simple. If you have an email registered, it is harder to steal your account.
Basically, keep your information secure and don't just trust anyone with it. If they can figure out the answers to your recovery questions, know your account start-up year, and your internet service provider they have a pretty good chance of recovering the account. This is also why you don't always trust bought accounts, someone might just steal it back to re-sell for cash.
II. What to Watch Out For
1. Phising Emails
Every time I hear people want say they opened an email and got hacked, the only reaction I have is this; .
Jagex will NOT send you an email if you were banned, and they will not tell you why you were reported. If the email is not from Jagex Ltd. it is not them. Also, the only emails you will get are updates, since they have already stated that they will never email you about bans. The only time to find out your account has been banned if you were told when logging in that your account was disabled.
Examples of Phishes - NEVER OPEN THESE;
Spoiler: Phishing Emails
3. Watch Out for Low Post Count [Forum]
Not saying that all people with low post count are out to scam you, but 99% are. They will post once or twice with some link to a "private server" or something of that kind, when all they want to do is either scam you or hack you. Be careful on what you click on, and always make sure that someone has verified that it is safe if you have any doubts on the link. Also, make sure you have good enough protection on your computer so even if you do something stupid, you at least have a back up plan.
III. Common In-Game Scams, Don't fall for them
1. Doubling Money
You will see it everywhere, and all the time they will claim to be legit. It is basically one of the first "trust games" to come out recently after Free Trade returned. The point is you trade them an amount of money, and they will trade you back double. So, where is the scam? The scammer will either have a friend or will do it legit once, and then start taking trades until they make double the amount. Then they will simply log off and that is that. You can't report a player if they aren't logged on (unless this has been changed recently). Don't fall for it, unless it is done in 1 trade it is a scam.
suggestion for the doubling money thing.. 90% of the time u can scam a scammer by saying something like if u double this 100k ill let u double this 5mil most of them are so greedy that they will double your 100k to get to your 5mil, then just logg out.. ive done this about 10 time and only once did they ever take off with the 100k
Also, Guessing Games such as this are also bad;
2) Dungeoneering skillcape emote scam...they use archers rings ETC. to choose their emote
3. Bidding Games
"Quitting Giveaway 150m follow me!" How many people have seen these types of messages in the GE recently? This is the beginning to the great bidding game for their money. So how does it work? They will most likely have a smaller gift for something small, and then go into bigger items and start the bidding game. The point is to out bid the other people, but to bid you have to trust your money to the person giving their gear away. In short, your doubling your money all over again. Once the bidding gets high enough, they log and now they made a few mil off of your stupidity. NOTE: Sometimes these can be real, I have seen it once.
3. Goodie-Bags
Oh look at that 50m goodie bag, I could win something awesome and it will only cost me 500k-3m (standard prices), what scam could happen here? Here is the fun part, normally they will show you the inveltory, so really you just say what you want, except they will mix up their gear or they will just give you the cheapest thing they have. They aren't there to be fair, they are there to get as much money as they can before they "have to give away the bigger items". Don't fall for this, sometimes they will give a decent item, but thats just to keep people interested in the scam long enough to make more money from it.
4. Lunar Teleport Lure
Be sure you pay attention when you have aid on. Some people will offer to teleport you to Lunar Island, but will use Ice Platue teleport. If you accidently accept it is over. You cannot teleport away, and there will be people there waiting to kill you for whatever you have with you. If you are luck like I was (the first time this was tried on me) the idiot will say he needs help on lunar island, can't get there, but magically has a teleport. Remember that lurers aren't always the brightest bulb in the group, and they are just trying to get you to believe them with everything they have.
5. Illegitimate Dicing
There are such a thing as legit dicing, don't get me wrong. You will have groups that will have people with rank just to make money off of your stupidity. Don't dice with a group unless you know for a fact that they are legit and aren't out to get your money. If this becomes more of an issue on the forums, I'll do some more research and construct a list of legit dicing clans.
