Buying Advice Needed for Complete Noob

I want to buy Instagram and Twitter handles from an average Joe user who has both.

We've negotiated and settled on a price.

What is the best way for doing the actual handover?

One way would be for the seller to simply go into the settings of the Instagram and Twitter accounts and change the associated email accounts to the one we give him.

We would then delete all their content and unfollow all the people they previously followed.

The downside to this method is the seller would lose all their content and their connections. The seller would very much like to maintain them.

I'd like to know if this alternate method is feasible:

The seller would go into the settings and select new usernames, thereby abandoning the ones I want to buy.

They would tell me the exact moment they make the switch. I would then register new accounts on Twitter and Instagram and grab the just released handles.

So, again, my question is - is this feasible? Are handles made instantly available like that?

Or is there another method whereby I can get access to the handles and the seller gets to hold onto their followers and content?
