Anonymous threatens Mexican drug cartel

HACKTIVIST GROUP Anonymous, or at least a part of it, has threatened revenge on a Mexican drug gang after it kidnapped one of its members.

Although the victim's name has not been made public the group said that it will publish the details of Zetas gangsters if they do not release him or her.

In a video posted to the Spanish Youtube web pages earlier this month it told the group, which is allegedly responsible for quite a few deaths not to mention a steady flow of drugs into the US, that it shouldn't have taken it on and if it does not comply be the end of this week, 5 November, it will release an avalanche of details about them.

"You made a huge mistake by taking one of us," Anonymous said. "We can't defend ourselves with a weapon but we can with their cars, homes, bars, brothels and everything else in their possession... We all know who they are and where they are."

The cartel, or any drugs cartel, is probably not to be taken on lightly, and in Twitter conversations the group has pushed towards and pulled away from the proposed action.

"ADVISORY: #Anonymous #OpCartel is dead. Due to the safety risks for all #Anons, #OpCartel has been called off," says a tweet from the @Anachrynon Twitter account that was posted earlier this morning. "Worldwide news outlets say we engaged Zetas in war, even if no OpCartel. Now #Anonymous are all in danger. Do not take this as a joke."

However Anonymousabu, or Sabu, who apparently is a key member of the goup, has given the operation Opcartel his full support, "#OpCartel is very much alive and like I said to others in private our war is on corruption on both sides of the spectrum. Vamos a GUERRA!," he tweeted.

The operation seems to come from a Twitter account called, @Sm0k34n0n, an account that has since been deleted. Its possible that this person also changed their mind shortly before removing themselves from the debate, as Sabu added,

"Too bad. We are taking over. It is time we take on the corruption on both sides of the 'war on drugs' The DEA and Cartels. Thanks for pushing the op, but now that you've cleaned your hands of it - move on with your life."

Some Twitter posters have suggested that part of Anonymous split off to form a group that is willing to attack the cartels. This could function like the headline grabbing Lulzsec, it was suggested, of which Sabu was a member. µ

It's an idea, and when thousands, if not millions of people share the same idea, they do things together to try and push the idea.

That's a great way to explain it.

Which one? There is no dedicated Twitter feed because it's not a group.

There is no fake anon twitter account. Anon is not a group, it doesn't have a central twitter account.

AnonIRC is the one that usually reports on new OPs. That's it.

Whats to stop me making a anonymous looking twitter account, I assure you, someone will have made an account just to try and get some attention.

So your saying Anonymous is just a single person?
Why does everyone including public anonymouse representatives always talk about a group.
As already mentioned a couple of times before, the news reports are saying that the anonymous blog and twitter feed said that a member of the hacking collective was kidnapped.

Well known phrase "We are Anonymous"

Im not saying your wrong, but it looks like 99.9% of people believe that Anonymous is a group not a single person. And it would be stupid to bet against those figures.

I never said it was a single person. Check my previous posts. It's thousands of people.

It's not a group though. We are not members of anonymous. There are no official leaders or representatives. It is an idea. And when lots of people agree on an idea, they help and do things together, they support the cause, they participate. But we are not a group.
