I have read all of the Harry Potter books and watched all of the Harry Potter books up to the current one. I feel this qualifies me to speak about the two different mediums.
I feel that the movies are better than the books for the simple reason that it gives us great, beautiful visualizations of the imagery presented to readers of the books. I, for one, love seeing special effects of magical and terrific aspects of books, which cannot be done on film without special effects. in my opinion, some movies surpass the book version because the movie tries to skim the story down to the basic plots and components, resulting in a faster paced story that can be told in a few hours rather than a few days. This can be very good as long as the story isn't chopped down so much that the end product is nothing like the book story.
