Are Videos/Films better than Books?

So I was having an argument with a friend of mine earlier this evening. I was of course in favour of the books more than I was ever in favour of the visuals in comparison to the written material. His point was that a video saves a lot of time and sums up the book to the point. But I argued that the books give you the extra detail and that nothing can beat 'reading' and creating your own imagination. For example; he said that instead of reading the book - The Secret - I should watch the documentary and simply get the point they are trying to convey. He said that it would save my time and give me the ultimatum which is Success or Positive thinking in this matter. Now I can't seem to understand why I would want to watch a video which will obviously miss out on a 100 things that a book would explain in great detail. I understand and believe that books give you the extra 'edge' which is most of the time required to get the winning end. I don't say that Videos are completely useless but I also don't find them as convincing as a book may be.

I wanted to know the opinion of people here, what they think of this.. And is reading books really that much a waste of time? It hurt me to keep quiet while he kept on reasoning about videos and stuff.. As far as I've experienced, most people hated the films Twilight, Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons etc.. Now he tells me to just get to the point and cut the crap, if they're ultimate motive is to get you to start thinking positive, then do it. How the f*ck is someone supposed to do something without acquiring enough knowledge about that particular subject. Why are there billions of people out there who 'read' and not just watch a fucking video on Youtube which will give them the same end result. Why do most of the successful people in the world read.. Professors, Scientists, Researchers.. I've witnessed all kinds then WHY is that I should consider videos to be better than books. Another example I got about the difference and reading was that a video will show you how a particular character in a novel looks like and you'll be able to memorize him better than when you read the details in the book and create him yourself.

I guess that should do for now, please give me input and feedback on this subject as I'd really like to get myself straightened up.

I think films and videos are better and more details than books. Beside that, it can transfer you an emotion, a feeling and you can easily receive all content of the films or videos. Books just give you an imagination but they're not impact on your senses.

obviously books are better than video because in books we read in detail but in video or movie the director summarize the story of the book :) and book are the best friend as well :)

If u read books u need allot of imagenation and fantasy.
At a movie u just look at someons else his view on the movie ( or book if there's a book befor the movie)
Me, personally i like movies allot more.

Both are good, sometimes i need to watch a film because its easy to understand and i do not have to think, just have a good time. but books are so great, they take you into a world all your own. You get to use your imagination and you because of this you have a better chance of enjoying what you are reading.

for me movie is the best than books because you can much understand if watching than reading, sometimes if you read it takes for a day but if you watch the stories it takes only for an hour.for me film/films is better than books.

i agree with you that you get extra detail when reading books rather than watching them in film. i used to read a lot, but because i don't have a lot of spare time now, i end up watching movies first before reading the written story. if i liked the story in the film, i try to make time to read the book...and as always, i prefer the written version.

For me Movie is the best aside of you can really understand it you dont need to imagine the situation anymore all you have to do is sit relax and watch you can relate your self easily to movie and get inspired.

Ive found very few movies that compare to the books. I agree that you get more detail from reading and most movies dont live up to what Ive imagined.

The only exception to that for me was the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. While it didnt exacly match the books, Jackson did try to stay faithful to the text and visually they were probably the most beautiful movies Ive ever seen.

Well this is a very debateable topic. Each of this has its own importance. To lazy and people who are allergic to book for them videos/ film might be the best solution for them they have the package right infront of them. The people addicted to book and love reading they go for reading books so the option is yours and i would go for books :)
