Battle of Unix vs. Windows
Unix and Windows are basically competitors. Apple Macintosh is also a good operating system. But Apple ran out of business due to aggressive Microsoft. It was also famous earlier but Microsoft killed many such companies.
Unix was very versatile earlier but now it is in a slowdown state. As we see that major Unix vendors have recently closed down. For example, Sun Microsystems Inc., one of the Unix Giants was taken over by Oracle Inc. Other Unix Vendors e.g. HP Unix, SCO Unix, SGI Unix are currently the last remaining lone survivors. A decade ago, Unix market was very promising. But after the Windows came into the market, Unix faced tough competition. The major market for Unix comprises of mid-range and enterprise server range computers. In the personal computing area Windows is the best. Nobody uses Unix in the personal computing area though Linux is used. Linux is also a type of Unix and it competes with Windows. But it is a free software. Now Windows has also captured the server market from Unix. Most of the big companies are now choosing Windows rather than Unix. So the market for Unix is depleted. Microsoft business strategy is such that it makes the users addicted to Windows. Once they buy the product, there are many other products which are required by them. So the users get addicted to it. Whereas Unix is powerful but it is cryptic. Ordinary users cannot understand it.
Even Microsoft has a lawsuit against Unix vendor Sun Microsystems over java issues. It was a long blistering battle between them. Finally after the decline of Sun, Microsoft has captured its market.
