Buying ads worth it?

I was thinking of buying some advertisement space on various websites but was wondering do you ever click them?

My forum is a general forum with no specific niche, it will host monthly competitions to win anything from $5 through paypal to a PS3 once we get enough revenue.

So my question is, Is buying ads of websites worth it?

Depends.
You can either buy Adsense (cheap) or buy from your local webmaster. I mean there are many people on forums who make their own websites and make room for advertising, you can buy cheap from them or befriend then and get a better discount - this way is more lenient. You can also promote your forum on other forums sites, I saw a thread on here that publish forums that do forum promos.
