Computer Science, or Software Engineering?

I'll be off to college in a year, and I would like to know what I should get my Bachelors in, Computer Science or Software Engineering. From what I can understand, people who get are computer scientists are the ones who develop and optimize specific features and algorithms, tinkering away at a detail until it's perfect, often times leading to a frail overall structure. Software Engineers take tried and true information and techniques and use them to develop a robust, if slightly unoptimized, solution. As a hobby programmer using java, I seem to fall into Software Engineering. I study tried and true methods, use powerful libraries, and create programs that simply work.

In short, I'm unsure what to do. I've always loved math, and once I learn to apply it properly to programming, I would love to tinker with algorithms, but I also want more out of my programs.

in our country, if you take computer science as a bachelor's degree, you'll be able to take up a subject called software engineering. so if you want to learn computing in general, go to computer science, else if you want to learn specifically in a field of computer science, then go to software engineering.

See it's different in the US. Software Engineering implies many DIFFERENT specialties bundled together. I'm also going to the first school to offer SE as a degree.

I'm leaning towards a SE, but I still have time. The first year of SE and CS are exactly the same. A few introductory cs classes and a ton of maths.

I guess if you choose computer science and engineering you will able to learn both. But i will prefer for software engineering and i guess computer is everything with software so its better if your certificate is regarding to software engineering. I have seen two person looking for job basically two friends from same university and with same grade but software engineer got job first rather then the computer engineer now why i don't know so i will prefer if you go for software.

I suggest you Software Engineering. Because you'll be dedicated to designing, implementing, and modifying software so that it is of higher quality, more affordable, maintainable, and faster to build.

Why not go for computer science? It's not as good as my course as software developer but it cs tackles mostly about the general programs..

I am a graduate of Computer Science. I also had a subject Software Engineering. Software Engineering tackles specific topics in softwares, analysis and designs. Whilst my course, Computer Science deals with theories and algorithms used to solve problems (a lot of Mathematics subjects). That is, Computer Science is applied in general. However, Software Engineering will also cover some of the theories and algorithms tackled in a CS class.

SE is a specialization of CS.

As far as the U.S. goes, they are two separate jobs, two separate degrees, two separate salaries, and two separate qualifications. I believe there are many more Programming jobs than software engineering jobs, and Software Engineers are in much greater demand, and receive a larger salary. On average 10-20k more than that of a programmer.

Computer Science + Advanced Computer Science = Job at Google/Yahoo/Microsoft.

I was doing BA of ICT, but then dropped out. 'cause I was getting bored.
