Today, aspiring DJs everywhere cried a tiny tear when they noticed that the Deadmau5 avatar (reserved for high-ranking DJs who have scored 1000 to 9999 points) had gone missing.
In its place is the message: “Deadmau5 avatar has been reserved for the actual deadmau5. So instead, may we present our awesome monkey couple.”
For those unaware of how still-in-beta service Turntable.fm works, it’s a series of web-based chatrooms in which “DJs” take turns spinning tunes, which other users rank as “awesome” or “lame.” “Awesome” votes garner DJs points, which net them more elaborate avatars (like the now-defunct Deadmau5 head).
Deadmau5, for those not in the know, is Joel Zimmerman, an electronica musician who regularly wears a giant mouse head on stage during performances.
The removal has Turntable users buzzing, questioning whether either Deadmau5 or his camp asked for that image to be restricted from public use. We’re reaching out to Zimmerman and Co. for comment.
For those TT.fmers in mourning, take heart, the Daft Punk Helmet is still up for grabs — provided you’re a Super User.
