You pose a point, but I don't really see why @philly couldn't just make it /registered users only.

Because then the guests do not see all the contests that entice new members to join. When the new theme is released there will be quite a few new features including a hide button similar to a spoiler however the only difference will be that only registered users can see what is within.

I think guests should only be able to view 5 threads before registering.
