The lungs, one of the largest organs in the body, work together with the rest of the respiratory system to allow fresh air and thus carry oxygen to body cells, blood and muscles. Factors such as smoking, pollution (air pollution) and health conditions such as asthma can affect the lungs' ability to function. But UK researchers have recently discovered that eating plenty of vitamin C could contribute to a better functioning of this organ.

Researchers tracked the diet of more than 1300 adults over a period of nine years. Study participants underwent periodic tests of lung function, they recorded their food intake and reported their smoking habits.

After taking into account factors that might affect lung function (as snuff), researchers found that people who had better lung function after nine years also had higher intake of Vitamin C.

Because of this they believe that a high intake of vitamin C and vitamin C rich foods can help protect against lung disease.
