well first if you want to install windows 7 you need a flash drive at least 4gb:
1. Insert your USB (4GB+ preferable) stick to the system and backup all the data from the USB as we are going to format the USB to make it as bootable.

2. Open elevated Command Prompt. To do this, type in CMD in Start menu search field and hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter. Alternatively, navigate to Start > All programs >Accessories > right click on Command Prompt and select run as administrator.

3. When the Command Prompt opens, enter the following command:

DISKPART and hit enter.

LIST DISK and hit enter.

Once you enter the LIST DISK command, it will show the disk number of your USB drive. In the below image my USB drive disk no is Disk 1.

4. In this step you need to enter all the below commands one by one and hit enter. As these commands are self explanatory, you can easily guess what these commands do.

SELECT DISK 1 (Replace DISK 1 with your disk number)

CLEAN

CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY

SELECT PARTITION 1

ACTIVE

FORMAT FS=NTFS

(Format process may take few seconds)

ASSIGN

EXIT
Don’t close the command prompt as we need to execute one more command at the next step. Just minimize it.

5. Insert your Windows DVD in the optical drive and note down the drive letter of the optical drive and USB media. Here I use “D” as my optical (DVD) drive letter and “H” as my USB drive letter.

6. Go back to command prompt and execute the following commands:

D:CD BOOT and hit enter. Where “D” is your DVD drive letter.

CD BOOT and hit enter to see the below message.

BOOTSECT.EXE/NT60 H:

(Where “H” is your USB drive letter)
7. Copy Windows DVD contents to USB.

You are done with your bootable USB. You can now use this bootable USB as bootable DVD on any computer that comes with USB boot feature (most of the current motherboards support this feature).

I also commented in the other thread the same as this one. You need a software that will make your pen drive into a bootable disk. Even a portable hard drive can be made into a portable drive with this software. It is called flash boot. I don't know if it is allowed to share links for software download, but if you really need it, just let me know, I will message the link to you.

This only works for Windows 7 OS. Others like windows XP and Vista, it will not work. You need to use a flash boot software so you can make your pen drive or any external drive into a bootable disk. I think I have shared it already with Rahul the link. PM me for those who want the link.

That is why, I don't post the link here as it is against the rules. If you want, you can google flash boot and download from there. If you want solution, I am giving it for free. Its up to you how to manage to download it. Patience is a virtue, if downloading it for 3 hours will solve your problem, it is still worth it than doing nothing.

I agree as this kind of making bootable usb flash disk is applicable only for x86 architecture OS, there is an application used to make your xp installation be based from your usb flash disk.

Here's how:

Note: kindly check your pc if it support boot up mode using removable flash drives.... before doing this!

1. If your optical drive is not working I suggest you to download any iso files for windows xp, (but I suggest you to use Licensed OS). iso files are those image files. Use your prefer torrent application.

2. Next download this application: Flashboot 2.0

3. Follow the instructions

4. Reboot you pc, make sure your usb flash drive is the first boot in device

5. Follow procedure in DOS mode...

6. Your done!

LBA mode of xp is different with Windows vista and 7 so you need to undergo different procedure in booting up. File partitions will be created by you, so make sure you are knowledgeable enough in doing this, if you are not sure ask some guidance or help from professionals...

Do it at your own risk!
