I am following all the steps I did to get 6k in four months 100% free. I would like to say though about two months and a half I stopped trying to get followers, and I also didn't try very hard (I got hacked for a week so I went down like 2k followers). If you try, you could get 10k+. I have made 1k in 12 hours so yeah.
Step 1:
Make a fresh Instagram account, make sure it has a username according to your post (Ex: Tumblr Textpost can relate to @whorsez), and make sure it is original. If you don't make it original (like me) it can be very hard to grow. So, some original ones are brazzer parody pages or urban dictionary account. Also it wouldn't hurt to put some effort into it and make a cool theme (EX: a checkerboard pattern, with one picture with a green background, blue background, then one with a green background. Will be getting a good example). I have seen those accounts who made in 2 months after me get same amount of followers, and who made it at the same day at 30k
Step 2:
If you want to do this 100% free then the first thing to get followers is by doing follow4follow. Make sure when you do this, you follow people who follow similar accounts, so they would have some interest. And if they are inactive then use a ghost app and delete them. Through this process, on my minecraft account (long time ago) I got 100+ likes on every picture with 500 followers. I also made sure they were following minecraft related instagrams. On @whorsez I got 100+ likes with 500-800 followers. I also made sure to follow people who followed similar accounts. (On both accounts I deleted 300 followers since they were inactive, so it was like a 3:5 ratio).
Also, during this time get to know some people on Instagram. They will become useful later.
Lastly, try to enter contest where you have to give them a shoutout and a possible chance to win (that is how I gained 300 followers in a minute through @whorsez. Not sure if they still do that though.

Step 3:
Once you reach 900 followers it is time for you to get rid follow4follow and instaghost, and now sfs. Since you are close to 1k ask big accounts for a shoutout, since they are generous. Make sure not to be annoying. Another thing, is that you could ask your friends for shoutout once a week.
If you don't know what sfs or s4s it is shoutout for shoutout. It is when you both agree to post a picture of a screenshot of they other person's account. Through this I have made 1k in 6-12 hours.

Step 4:
You are now on your way to become instafamous through sfs. Just make sure to do this though, to get fans and people to like you. This is optional, but it makes you feel a lot better knowing that people follow you for you and not your pictures. Also, with these steps, it has created people to make me fansigns, profile pictures, edit accounts, and fanpages.
