How To Secure Gamertags
for noobs
First Step:
Getting the correct login credentials, and signing in.
Click here for the login page.
Step Two (Optional):
Download Notepad++
Make a new text document (File -> New), and put these items on it. This is so we do not forget any login information, and you will have the details safely stored on your computer.
Step Three:
Go back to your browser, and go to account settings. This will be located on the top right of your inbox.
Step Four:
You will automatically be on "Basic Info". Change everything you see. The reason is, the old user can get the account back by entering enough valid information. Also, another tip would be wiping the mailbox clean, and removing all of them from your trash for maximum security.
Step Five:
Probably the most IMPORTANT step.
Change the password, and save it into your Notepad++ document. Add a new email address, and a new phone number. Then, remove ALL old info. None of it should be left. Setting up a two step verification is not needed but does add security to the account. Make sure you REPLACE the security code and save it under the "One Time Code" on your Notepad++ document. The security code is a very important key, this could save your account if it ever gets stolen. It's basically is a one time login code.
Step Six:
Go to "Aliases". Then, add your own email, and remove the old one. Then, go to your Notepad++ document and put the new alias under "Email".
Step Seven:
Go to "Related accounts". Then, remove all other accounts, and connected apps if there are any. This makes sure the old owner's stuff is FULLY disconnected from your account.
Step Eight:
You are done securing the email! Now lets head over to Xbox.com! Go ahead and sign in. Now once you have done that, click "My Account" at the top right.
Step Nine:
Go to "Payment & billing". You should see something like this.
Step Ten:
Remove ALL current billing information, and then click "Change billing address". Make sure you change everything. Also, if you are selling an account it is also a good idea to change this before you sell it to someone, so they do not know your information.
Step Eleven:
Navigate back to "My Account" and click "Manage Devices". Then click "Xbox 360 profile protection".
Step Twelve:
Click "Require Profile Download". This will remove access to the account from all previous consoles, unless they re download the profile.

Tips
Never buy a gamertag if the deal is to good to be true, unless he she has sufficient proof. Always ask the user selling the tag to message you on Xbox Live. Do not take screenshots as sufficient proof, because people can always Inspect Element. Also, always make sure you do not buy a fake gamertag. For example, I mm'd a deal and the user tried to sell a gamertag that an an "L" in replace of an "I". He almost got away with it.
Never trust the seller. Remember, no matter who they are they can still scam you. I would always request a Middleman, no matter what. I know @"Sector", @"Leader", and @"Seven" (myself) offer these services. Remember, reputation points, post count, join date, or even upgrade status does not matter. Although, I do believe that they are more trustworthy than new members.
You can also check for scam reports, always search their username with the search future. You can also search their UID. (user ID) You can get the UID by going to their profile, it will be the numbers at the end of the url.

Additional Securing Tips
If you are afraid of your tag getting suspended, banned, or anything of the sort you can always call Microsoft and get them to add notes to your tag.
Example: Your tag is being sold, you swapped it consoles. Tags with a lot of consoles usually get inspected. Sometimes... Anyways, if your tag is reported for "being up for sale", you can always call Microsoft and tell them your account was hacked and recovered to a new Xbox, but you now have it safely in your hands again. Then Microsoft will be under the impression you have everything resolved, and the consoles and IP changes are from the perpetrator.
Never tested this method, except once. Do not know if it fully works but someone let me know. It is worth a look at.

What Are Turbo's? + Swapping Safely
If you ever plan to swap your Gamertag to one account to the other, you better be buying a turbo. What is a turbo? A turbo is a program that rapidly claims Gamertags. Why buy it? Because other people may be trying to steal your Gamertag when it is available, you have to beat them to the punch. So basically to swap your tag with one of these programs, you are going to need a new Xbox Live account, or any account with a free name change via Xbox.com. After, you open up the turbo program and enter your new account details. Then, you enter the Gamertag you want, and as soon as it is available you claim it! These programs do NOT work on Spaced Tags. If you try to swap a space tag it will mess up and delete the tag forever. People also use these to steal accounts, so while selling beware on who knows about your tag. When you first buy your Gamertag, I would wait up to a month before swapping it to a new account. Do not tell anyone your Gamertag, and do not tell anyone you are swapping.
