I'd like to try out social mediums

Okay, so since almost everyone in FK is in the social mediums/gamertag world, I'd like to give it a try. I don't have an xbox, so I'll just start off with sm. Can anyone here help me out with the basics and how the whole business works? Any good strategy to carry along the way?
