Is America in denial about the level of its debt?

The answer, as seen from outside the USA, seems to be yes, although it is impossible, of course, to be aware of how individual Americans think. For the rest of the world, for America, read it’s decision makers - its movers and shakers - its politicians. It seems that while countries in other parts of the world are trying to reduce their debt, America appears only to wish to discuss raising the debt ceiling, or increasing its debt. Surely this cannot go on.

Some individual Americans have already learned what happens when they are tempted to increase their debt levels beyond their ability to repay - they can lose their homes. Major American companies have learned a similar lesson, and gone begging to Washington for taxpayers’ money to help them out.
What do you think about this?
