I believe that it's a privilege, not everybody can be a parent, just because you give birth or pay child support doesn't mean you're a "parent"
My "father" speaks to me once every two years and has told me he'll never help me pay for college, I don't consider him a part of the family at all. Being a parent means you're going to be there for your kid and help them through whatever they need in life instead of completely forgetting them or going out clubbing.
Something that really ticks me off though is when a hook-up leads to someone getting pregnant, the woman wants to keep it and then the guy is completely out and won't have anything to do with the child. I don't see how someone can be like that and completely ditch a kid when they were the idiot.
It's obviously hard to be a parent, you've got to have patience and a lot of time management, along with a somewhat sustainable source of income and the dedication to be a good one. In my opinion, if you can't look after a pet, then you can't look after a child.
