Is Religion Good for the World?

No, it doesn't. Fear is fear. You can associate it with another feeling, or a belief, or a relationship. It always means the same thing.

In this case, fear of eternal suffering is being maliciously used to force belief and worship into a supposedly: All loving, all knowing, all powerful and all present being. This god has quite an ego, to demand worship and love from beings he created, yet has zero contact with. It's ridiculous, it's funny, and it's scary that people buy into it. @Fireworks

I'm talking about the three biggest monothesitic religions; Christianty, Islam, and Judaism. Each one threatens it's adherents with eternal torture. The word fear does not change when used in a religious context. It literally means fear. Fear of god, fear of hell, fear of sin, etc.

You guys should open your eyes. You'd be amazed at how much you'd see.

If you refuse to open your mind you'll miss so many things in life.

There's not always one path for everything.

@Leader @alt

I'll explain more once you guys can see.

No rudeness intended too btw.

I can see, you're the one that is blinded by religious dogmatism. Everything you just said has no meaning, by the way. It's pure gibberish.

Right? He's just spewing random
shit instead of giving a direct response. It happens everytime, and its very unsatisfying. I am extremely open minded @Fireworks ..if I weren't I wouldn't be having a discussion with somwone of an opposing viewpoint. You just failed to make any counter points that could compete with the facts I'm laying down. It isn't surprising. Like I said it happens everytime. You lost

Religion is one of the worlds most deadly powers, millions have been killed in the name of god. In fact if you think about it almost every war has some roots in religion and/or money

I don't think it is considering we spent centuries killing each other about who is correct about something that they aren't even sure about when science could be so much more advanced if we put our efforts to that instead of religion and the arts.
Not trying to offend anyone btw.
I love you all.

Youre open minded yet you refuses to think that a word can have different definitions based on context? Makes sense.

Oh and just because your arguing with someone trying to convince them of a certain veiwpoint doesnt mean that your open minded. In fact youre probably more close minded than you think.

@Leader im not religious at all. I dont belive that there is a god.

Check out this article here http://www.gotquestions.org/fear-God.html

Note that it says that the fear in this sense can be synonymous to the word reverance. Which a quick search on Dictionary.com led to this definition: deep respect for someone or something

So do you see what I mean now?

You guys are so deadset that fear has to mean to be afraid of something that your clouding your own vision. Hence what I mean when I say you guys cant see.

Ok, no there is absolutely no good that comes from religion, i was raised as a Catholic and saw all the oppression parents and the church puts on vulnerable children and how it really fucks their minds for the future. I believe that if religion was abolished completely there would be so much less violence and terrorist acts especially for the islamic faith.

Religion is good. It's brought about great things throughout history, and continually will. Of course it's had it's negative aspects, but what doesn't?

I think religion has caused more war and murder than anything else in the world.
I honestly feel the world would be much different without the religions we follow.

Some people might see it that way. However, when you're threatened with eternal torture, yes torture for the rest of eternity, it doesn't become reverence. It become literal fear.

Depends on the religion. Nkt all religion teaches about the eternal hellfire, however for those who do, I can see how it would come off that way. And in fact I agree with you. But if you just look at the aspect of the word fear without looking at eternal hellfire thats what it means.

And thats all I was trying to say. Because to me the teaching of an eternal hellfire for sinning is bull, and youre right it seems like a threat.
