So, I've been thinking, and, recently it seems although slang is in fact more popular than proper English.

Every where you go people have a different way of talking nowadays.

so i was wondering, technically now as slang is more popular, do you think it will become the way everyone in our generation talks?

or do you think it will fizzle out?

Slang is popular when people socialize, because people, especially the youth, has become accustomed to it and see no point in going through the trouble to monitor their grammar. I don't think slang will be as dominant as proper English, because people expect quality work from newspapers, scientific articles, debates, etc..

Slang has pretty much become a common part of language. The only concern is whether or not people realize when they're using slang. For example, I always use slang when talking with my buddies, but when it comes to writing a paper, I can use fully proper English.

To be honest this "proper English" you talk about is just slang from every other language thousands of years older than itself.

I agree with most of the other comments. People use slang mostly when talking with friends, hanging out, posting on facebook, etc. But when you are in the work place, trying to be professional, doing school work and such then you most likely will be using proper English. Some people go a little overboard with their slang and take it to a point where they almost aren't speaking English at all, and we call those people idiots. These people know how to speak English, but they use it wrong because they think that is how they are supposed to talk to fit in with the people around them. It is possible that after such a long time of talking like an idiot that they begin to truly believe that is how English is spoken....

It became more popular when Webster started adding slang words into the dictionary..

But, I for one, still believe in proper English. I find it funny when my friends on FaceBook don't use and grammar and I correct them.. It's an autowin for trolling :p

Hah, I have seen some funny pictures showing this kind of trolling. It is horrible and really funny at the same time. Sometimes it makes me go "really!?" when people talk so badly on Facebook. What I mean by that is they talk like "yal don got nutin on me"....because they talk just as bad in real life. -.-

This one girl, only uses the "," key. So her sentences will be like "guin out to da gymmm,,,den guna go hang wif da bube,,,txt mee<3".

I literally took a picture of my comma key and posted it. Then I told her that my 9 year old brother had better grammar than her.

I literally facedesked when I saw that..

Wow. Is it sad that stuff kind of gets on my nerves? It is just that it isn't that hard to do it correctly. I mean you aren't saving yourself time typing like that. No other reason you would do that other than you want more attention or something.

Actually....most of the people at the high school I went to talked just as bad in real life. Not being racist or anything, just stating the truth. The majority of my school was black people. Think it was about 68% black. (If by me stating this makes me racist, then so does stating that some other place is mostly white. *LOGIC*)

Well, you mostly hear slang from teenagers and 20~ year olds. Sometimes it's just colloquial talking to their friends. But yeah, the english language is very 'blurred'.

Well, when you're doing things like texting, it's popular.

You'll do: lol, lmao, smd, etc.
You wouldn't do: *Laugh Out Loud*, *Laugh My Ass Off*, *Suck My Dick*

I don't think that is considered slang. Those are just acronyms. Letters that stands for real words to make the message quicker to type out and shorter. They are just acronyms like any other acronym such as FBI, NFL, etc.
