Linear Thread View Layout Problem

I have a problem with the thread view, it's set to linear and when I put it on default and save changes it goes straight back to linear.. I know some people told me to fix it you need to inspect element and such but I couldn't find any threads regarding this problem. If you know how to fix this please let me know, I would be extremely grateful.
