Obscene Questions

Every society faces a major dilemma in trying to decide which ideas and actions are safe for its citizens to participate in. Perhaps, a primitive one has less difficulty, in that its population is rather homogeneous and opportunities for divergence are relatively scarce. But a modern culture has considerable wealth beyond the provision of the essentials, many dissimilar groups living in close proximity, easy movement of people and goods, and means of sophisticated psychological pressure plentifully available for persuading people to indulge themselves.

Does the government have the duty to protect people from harmful influences (such as pornography)? Or, in a democracy, should the people have the right to read anything they desire?

Discussion points:

1. Maybe children should be prohibited from reading pornographic literature, while adults should be allowed to make their own choices?
2. Who is the most responsible for the porn proliferation in our society, the writers, the publishers, the readers, or insidious foreign influences?
3. What can we do about it?
4. What is obscene, anyway?
5. Do you think all writing should be protected by the freedom of the press?

Here's my specific answer for your questions.

1. Children must be prohibited by reading and browsing pornographic materials, because it is way awkward for a 6 year old child to know what is sex or how sex is done. It is also cause of premarital sex and rape cases. While Adults should be allowed to read and browse by discretion only, not in front of children or female peers.

2. Well the responsibility of porn proliferation is the society we are living to, the writers/producers of that porn film/magazine, the publishers of that media and the readers itself.

3. Well, if you are browsing porn materials, you should view it on discretion and not on public places (internet cafes or gaming shops). Plus discipline yourself and know the sex itself. (Uhhh, reading sex education articles will do)

4.An obscenity is any statement or act which strongly offends the prevalent morality of the time, is a profanity, or is otherwise taboo, indecent, abhorrent, or disgusting, or is especially inauspicious. The term is also applied to an object that incorporates such a statement or displays such an act.

5. Sure it is needed to protected against plagiarism. But the press itself should set a standards with those intellectual rights.

I agree with you that children should be accompanied with their parents while browsing the net. However, that method is somewhat idle because the mundane reality is that most parents don't have enough time for doing that thing. Children are left unaided whenever they are facing their monitor and checking on everything in the net.

1.Children should be protected from whatever harm it may cause them. Pornography of course is one of those harmful factors. Exposure to those materials poses great danger in the development of their young minds and morals. They way they think should be influenced by good reading materials and good examples set by adults, most particularly by the parents.

2. Anyone involved in the publishing, and even the authorities who failed in the campaign against pornography can be held responsible for the proliferation of pornography. Each of us must do our part in preventing the spread of these materials. The simplest and most effective of which is by not patronizing those. We must realize that these materials circulate only because there is a market. If no one is gonna buy those, then there will be no mass production of it anymore.

3. The fact that you browse a pornographic material means you are contributing to the sale of those products. No matter how discreet we can be, still, there will be a conscience that will nag us, telling that one day, your child is gonna see that too. I believe if we prevent ourselves from getting involved in viewing or whatever form of patronizing, then we are helping save our own children too. I believe people have different level of intelligence. Perhaps to some people they know their options, but what about those who think naively. I fear the "would be" consequences if they would be unable to control themselves.

4. Obscene for me is plainly immoral acts or words that one may see or do which is sexually offensive.

5. Of course, who would want his/her own writings that he meticulously thought of and planned for be stolen by others? Literary works should be copyrighted so that no one can claim that what you've done have been already done by others. Stealing is a crime and should be punished by the law so that offenders would learn their lessons.,
