Creating a viral video is hard, but the wizards at Red Giant Software have nailed it. With less than $10,000 in their pockets but armed with a great idea and serious filmmaking skills, the company enlisted the help of indie filmmaker Seth Worley to create “Plot Device,” a viral video that topped 540,000 views on Vimeo and YouTube in its first two weeks.
What are they promoting? It’s not immediately evident, but Red Giant Software is a small company that develops visual effects plug-ins, and with each activation of this “Plot Device,” you see a different visual effect included in its Magic Bullet Suite 11 software.
Because they’re marketing to filmmakers, not only did the Red Giant crew need a compelling idea — they needed to execute the effects well enough to impress those who create special effects for a living. So they gambled, rounding up friends, volunteers and a lot of donated equipment to make this mini masterpiece.
