For example. A kid is in the principal's office and a teacher walks by and says I expect better from you.

The teacher obviously didn't tell the student to "do better" she told him that her expectations were false. She predicted the student was a smart, nice person but she was wrong NO WHERE did she say you have to do something.

An ACTUAL example: A dumbass does whatever dumbasses do. Dumbass's mother is all like, "I expect better from you." That means: She expects him to not do what dumbasses do.
