Check in with Foursquare, and you can get a discount on Redbox movie and game rentals.
That, in essence, is the promotion the two services will run from August 15 through August 24. Customers who check in at one of the 33,000 Redbox kiosks during that time will get discount codes ranging from $0.10 to $1. The codes can be used to get the discounts that day.
This is the latest push to encourage Redbox users to connect the kiosks to their mobile devices. More than 68% of the U.S. population lives within a five-minute drive of a Redbox kiosk. Using the company’s iPhone and Android apps, consumers can get real-time access to kiosk locations and title availability. Those apps have been installed 6.6 million times. The company also has a texting program with 2.7 million subscribers.
Redbox, which competes with Netflix and Blockbuster, continues to thrive despite a 28-day lag on some new movie releases. In its most recent quarter, parent company Coinstar reported that Redbox’s revenues grew 34% to $363.9 million. In June, Redbox also began offering videogame rentals for Nintendo Wii, Xbox and PlayStation 3 platforms.
