As Rune Revolution takes a wider expansion in the ways they advertise the forums I think you should try to keep track on how users are figuring out about the forums. So when registering, they simply answer how they found out about RR and that'll help you guys figure out what's the best option to go with when advertising.

I really like this idea, it'd be a great insight into to which advertisements are working and which aren't.
Yeah, if you're going to be experimenting you want to know what works best.
reffereral spot? Maybe make it a drop down from different websites and then a current user and then it allows you to enter a name
