Respect Your Beliefs?

I watched a video about this topic earlier and I agreed with the speaker that I don't have to respect your beliefs or anyone's.

For Example: http://theflatearthsociety.org/cms/ and Creationists.

These people still think the Earth is flat despite all the evidence that says the Earth is indeed a sphere and Creationists believe that Evolution is wrong. How can I respect those beliefs when there's so much evidence that refutes them and them being illogical? The only reason people held those beliefs is because their holy text said otherwise, and their text is unreliable and a couple of millennium years old. How I possibly respect their beliefs with that basis? I have this viewpoint on all religion too. I find it incredibly hard to respect people's beliefs when they're so illogical and silly.

I don't have to respect your beliefs, just your right to your beliefs. The belief doesn't have to be about religion either.

Please comment below, I want to explore more on this topic.

You categorize all religious people or people with beliefs as nut jobs who take the bible or whatever text 100% literal. I'm a Catholic but doesn't mean i'm blind to the truth, such as evolution. You are not forced to respect people's beliefs or religions but its extremely arrogant not to.

Not nut jobs, simply ignorant.

If the text wasn't to be taken literally, then what was the point of writing it in a figurative way?

I'll respect their right, but not their beliefs. That's not arrogant.

Humans best relate or comprehend symbolism better than anything else. Partially my belief is that the Bible is more of a moral code in which you should love everyone and everything unconditionally(With some other life values as well).

P.S.- They all also see you as ignorant or a nut job.

I'm assuming that you're assuming that with no factual basis.

I don't understand why you would use a book that condones murder, sexism, homophobia and ofter screwed up stuff as a moral code. You can have morals without a book telling you how to live your life.

Haha, I know.

The same way you are assuming with no factual basis.

I also believe that the Roman Catholic Church twisted the book to fit there own wants. There were thousands of pages of the Bible that just disappeared and some that appeared.

That's besides the point, and since you said that I'm pretty positive there's no factual basis for what you said.

How do you know that thousands of pages of the Bible disappeared? I haven't heard anything about that, do you mean the translations or something? Speculation is a good thing, but we can't speculate everything. We need a factual basis if we're going get anywhere or make any potentially valid theories.

I feel like you're taking one group of nut jobs and assuming that every other group is as crazy as they are.
There is no factual proof that Christianity or other religions are or aren't true. You can act like you're too cool to respect others all you want (which is pretty much what you're saying), but it will just make people think that you're a selfish prick.

I wouldn't say they're all crazy, perhaps ignorant, but even then their ignorance wouldn't be equivalent. Some are more than others i.e The flat Earth society.

And there's no factual proof that the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is or isn't false either. I hope you see my point.

I don't believe I'm 'cool' for not respecting others' ridiculous religious beliefs at all. Also, just because I don't respect their beliefs doesn't mean I'm going to start making accusations that they're ignorant or anything of that sort.

If they choose to view me as selfish, then so be it, I'll carry the burden for my beliefs. Even then why should I care what they think of me?
