I've been using Avast Free Edition for a year now and it satisfies me. It detects things once in a while and it's easy to turn off when you don't want it to be active.

I use AVG on my desktop and I don't use any on my laptop, thats probs not a good idea

Avira scored a higher detection rate then AVAST.

The best protection is not always the wisest decision. Sometimes, AV's will make plenty of false positives and you'll be stuck uninstalling valid applications for no reason. I can only tell you about Avast since that's all I've used long enough to evaluate it and it's satisfactory.
