Catering to the needs of users who want a powerful Android device without a costly monthly contract, Samsung has launched Galaxy WiFi 3.6. It’s an Android device similar to a smartphone but without a SIM card, and thus without the ability to make calls.
If you’re wondering who would want such a thing, just think of Apple‘s iPod touch. A simple (“dumb,” as these devices are often called) phone does the job when you need to call or text someone. Having an Android device — one that can launch apps, connect to the Internet and browse the web — on the side can be an interesting proposition for those on a tight budget.
Enter Samsung Galaxy WiFi 3.6: an Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) device with a 1 GHz OMAP processor, a 3.65-inch screen, 8 GB or 16 GB of memory (further expandable through microSD cards), Wi-Fi connectivity and a 2-megapixel camera on the back plus a VGA one on the front for video calls.
It also comes with most of the bells and whistles adorning today’s smartphones, such as GPS, a 3.5 mm ear jack, Bluetooth, USB 2.0, accelerometer and compass. Finally, it supports a wide variety of video and audio codecs, which makes it quite a nice little package for multimedia, gaming, or app use on the go.
Samsung Galaxy WiFi 3.6 will launch in the UK in early October and will be available from retailers including Dixons, Amazon, Littlewoods, HMV and Argos. The price in the UK will be £149 ($242) for the 8 GB version, and £169 ($274) for the 16 GB variant. There’s no word on pricing or availability in other countries yet.
