Pretty self explanatory title.
What do you think? Give reasons for your choice.
Personally I am somewhat torn. my thoughts are below:

Reasons for yes:
Cyber crimes—harmful acts committed from or against a computer or network—differ from most terrestrial crimes in four ways.
•They are easy to learn how to commit;
•They require few resources relative to the potential damage caused;
•They can be committed in a jurisdiction without being physically present in it;
•They are often not clearly illegal.

"Why would you bother with flying a plane into a skyscraper when you could cause a crisis of confidence in the financial sector with an Internet-based attack?"
"You don't even need to rob the banks, just cause a run on them."
One of the key challenges for law enforcement authorities is the lack of a coordinated global structure under which cybercriminals can be charged and prosecuted. To take advantage of this, some groups have set themselves up in countries with less stringent checks and controls.

The point on which i would like to stress is the fact that the consequences of cyber crime are as cruel as those of murder,rape,etc. and in some cases worst than taking ONE life.
so my friend don't you think its high time for the government to bring some changes in the law structure keeping in mind the harshness of cyber crime.

Reasons for no:
 Even though some of extreme cases of cyber crimes cause victims to be seriously affected in their lives, cyber crime cannot be compared with the pain of victims of the most extreme crimes as murder,rape, etc.

Cyber crime has threatened the society ever since the use of internet has been open to people so easily, because anonymity of people is guaranteed. Even though they occur more frequently than such crimes as murder or rape, they do not cause as bad effect to victims as murder or rape does to them.

The punishment of a crime should be decided upon its cruelty. The cruelty of cyber crime cannot be compared that of inhuman crimes, rape and murder;therefore, the punishment for cyber crime should not be the same as the punishment for rape or murder.

This isnt limited to extortion for social mediums. And I didnt tag you as a sign of disrespect.

There are much more evident issues in cyber crime. 2 examples being:

"Epsilon":
One of the costliest cyber attacks in history, the data breach in Epsilon, the world’s largest provider of marketing and handling services to industry giants such as JP Morgan Chase, Best Buy, and other major financial services, retailers and other major companies in 2011, has an estimated damage cost that ranged from $225 million to $4 billion dollars. The targets of the hackers were email addresses that they can use for their criminal activities, making its implications a lot greater than estimated.

"The Original Logic Bomb":
During the cold war in 1982, the CIA found a way to disrupt the operation of a Siberian gas pipeline of Russia without using traditional explosive devices such as missiles or bombs. Instead, they caused the Siberian gas pipeline to explode using a portion of a code in the computer system that controls its operation in what they tagged as “logic bomb.” The chaos that ensued was so monumental that the resulting fire was even seen from space

Cyber crime goes much further than stealing someones petty Instagram name, and these issues deserve more suitable punishments.

I think they should, because it gives it a challenge. Honestly cyber crime is just a game of outsmarting the system imo.

No screw all of you. Its the internet.

There are some situations where yes, it should be punishable, but not compared to rape/murder/burglary/any big felony.

Like I said its the internet, if your instagram/twitter/aim/any other SM/gamertag/whatever gets jacked, big deal, go outside or listen to some music.
You have to be a pretty big randy to get butt hurt over stupid crap on the internet.

Now lets say @Philly gets jacked for like a grand and his forum gets messed up and hacked, any kind of situation like that, then yes pressing charges is a good idea, but not the same as rape/murder/etc.

Thats a little bit too far to say internet crimes are the same as real life crimes, come on now

Yes I believe if they commit true crimes like credit theft, swatting(which has led to deaths), hacking into most things should be punished clearly, and should be locked up that is beyond fucked up. You have no life, what should it matter at that rate? Just no lifes on the Internet who think they're cool cause they can use a vpn and call in the police or hack information and banking information.

This is a "It's depends situation". I mean there are plenty of cybercrimes that aren't very harmful at all, but then there are ones like you listed that cost people millions. It depends.
