Sony {Debate}

As many of you know, Sony has recently sued "GeoHot" for jailbreaking their system. After that, The Anonymous hacker group DDoS'd(Distributed Denial Of Service) sony's websites, and ended up taking most of them down for a few hours. Here are my thoughts on the situation.

1) Sony is "selling" their PS3 consoles.
They are apparently 'renting' their consoles. They have stated multiple times that the PS3's are their property. I am fairly certain that when you buy something, and you pay it off, It is YOURS, not the people who made it's. In fact, The most recent update installs a root-kit on your PS3 so sony can know exactly what your doing at all times.

2) What sony is basically doing
Imagine i start a restaurant. I make delicious food, and sell it for about $300. The catch is, you are only aloud to take 1 bite. Take any more, and i sue you $500. Apply that to the PS3. They came over here telling us it can run linux, and shortly after, they removed that function. Think about all the people who payed $600 for a home-computer and a gaming/blueray center, only to be stuck with losing one of them. It was either never be able to play blueray/most games/access PSN, or keep your linux computer. Then the PS3 went down $300. Sony basically ripped us off.

Anyways, What i am debating is that Sony should allow us to Jailbreak/run CFW on our PS3's. I'll be happy to argue with the members of our forum.

(I put it in the gaming section because PS3=Gaming, but should this go into the lounge because of the debate factor? Btw, I'm really tired right now, I'll argue tomorrow.

Sony is always going to be right. With the number of conspiracies they have been involved in you know that they will get their way. On one hand they can do what LEGO did when their online custom building program came out and to not sue anyone and let their free spirited customers crack and modify their program. On the other hand they can be the stubborn corporation that they've always and sue anybody who is out-of-line. There's no doubt about it that they will sue and get these protesters exterminated. I'd like to also point out a fun fact that not everybody knows. Sony is actually a young company - before our generation (the 90's) Sony has been that second tier product provider that was leaning towards the wholesale and no name brand. They only started getting bigger as this generation came about, they sky rocketed in the different markets such as the music industry (signing M.J., R.I.P.), appliances, and electronics. Now they're the one of the top 10 most valuable brands, so they're not going to take shit from some wanna be hackers and masses of customers.

Geohot Was not a Wanna-be hacker. You do know what all he has jailbroken, Correct? When Geohot was sued, it was for "Enabling Piracy", But on his 3.55 CFW for the ps3, Which i used for a while, You cannot use back-up managers. Geohot disabled Lv2 patching. I don't see sony going after Kmeaw, or Waninkoko. They just went after Geohot.

Also, How is modifying SOMETHING THAT YOU BOUGHT stepping out of line? The PS3's in our house does NOT belong to sony anymore. We payed the full price for it, and we can now do whatever we want to it, as long as it isn't piracy or against the law.

I think that it's somewhere in the manual that if you modify the software or hardware the warranty will expire. They're lawyers can find some way to put them away or make them pay a large sum.

I think that it is really stupid that users are not allowed to jailbreak their own systems. If I pay money for something, it is my property and I can do what I wish with it. Unfortunately, big corporations like this always tend to get their way because of the great lawyer team they hire. I understand that if you modify your system, that it will lose it's warranty, however, suing them over this is just ridiculous.

I say the people who "Payed" for the system can jailbreak it all they want. Spice up the themes and what not. But along with jailbreaking is hacking. It opens up doors to hacking and other crap. Jailbreaking would be allowed but not the hacking of online games to cheat. I jtagged my own xbox and 4 of my friends and made a few single players mods but not hacks.

I do believe that Sony should allow jailbreaking of their PS3 and other systems. It is our right see what else this machine can do.

The problem you get into with allowing jailbreaking and legal issues is, even though sony no longer owns the ps3 that is in your house however they own PSN in which your ps3 connects to, so that can be found as illegal because it can alter some one elses gaming experience and can be taken as hacking. I mean if you did not connect your system to there network, there would be no way they could find out that you modded it, they could care less, what they are going on is there PSN being affected.

Yes, I agree they should not go online with a hacked system. What i think sony should do is allow the use of back-up managers, BUT they have to install from a disc. Nothing else. Then sony should allow us to use FTP to connect to our ps3's and modify the backed up games. Thats the only reason i jailbroke mine.
