Squaring of numbers near a power of ten

It's completely practical, it helps you quickly solve somewhat hard squaring .-..

But a calculator costs money, this doesn't. They both have the same end result but one is free, obviously you choose the free one.

A "simple" calculator cannot solve this, they lack the power of squaring.

A scientific calculator cost about $20 and can do squaring.

So again, Free > $20

Besides, doing this shows how smart you are.
 

Actually it doesn't require a scientific one, just multiply the number by itself.
Calculators are built into almost everything these days.
 
Did anyone ever take into account that you don't always have a calculator. And then human mind is way better at calculation, if you pratice.

But what if you don't have a calculator, like krazed said above? It's obviously not practical there, and if you always relied on your calculator and needed it for this specific thing, and didn't have any knowledge of this, would you not regret not knowing this?

A normal, average person? Not commonly. Someone in the mathematics realm? Often. Someone in the science realm? OFTEN. Just because the average person can't use it doesn't mean that it is not valid in any way shape or form.

I'm saying that no one needs to square big numbers in their head because there is such a thing as a calculater.

Sorry, this method isn't valid at all. If you are solving a math problem or doing anything math related, chances are that there is gonna be a calculater in front of you.
 
It's completely valid, mental math is an extremely important skill.
 
The mechanism is: x^2=x^2 - y^2 +y^2=(x+y)(x-y)+y^2.
Now if you want to find out 18^2, you can use the above formula: 18^2=18^2-8^2+8^2=(18+8)(18-8)+8^2=26*10+64=324.
