Why are there asterixes (*) next to some user's names?

For example..

I want one, they look nice to be honest.

That can't be right. I use Who's Online for more than half of my browsing, and they are all there.

I just enabled that and it added the asterisk.

True. But, decided I'm happy with the way my name looks already.
