My friends all know that I'm pretty good with computers. One of them knows a guy that comes to his work that said he had a problem with his computer. He referred him to me. I'm not a licensed IT specialist or anything but I'm pretty good with computers, as I said. So, now, I'm going to the guy's house to see what's up with the computer. I asked him to bring me the tower but he doesn't feel comfortable leaving it with me since he doesn't know me. When I get there, I'm planning on seeing what the problem is, if I can fix it under an hour, I'll do it. If it requires a reformat, I'll explain I need to take the tower and work on it at home. IF he doesn't let me, I'll tell him that I'm not going to stay over for 2-3 hours.

Bottom line here is that he's an old guy that just wants his computer fixed. He called me and asked how much I charge and I said 'Listen, I don't do this as a career, just for some friends here and there. I'm still 18 and am in school so I don't really have set prices but once I get there, I'll be able to quote you based on what the problem is and how much work will be required to fix it, etc.'

Now my friend is on his way to pick me up and go to his house. The question is; what should I charge this guy?

If you have to take it home you ought to just set a price for fixing it. If you're going to work for 2-3 hours I suggest just charging 24 dollars for the work, not mentioning hours.

Alright, that's what I was going to do. It's just I've never done work for someone before so I was curious to know how each job would cost (ie: reformat, virus removal, recovery, etc.)

It's not so much priced on job type unless you are unable to provide a price p/h. So this should work. :)

LMAO. I just got back from his house. The guy's a f-a-g, quite literally. He was some old skinny French guy with a really pruny tan. He was a twig. We walked in his house and he had an incent setup to cover the smell of his cigarettes and was wearing those gay slippers with the animal heads on the front tip.

I sat down and asked what the problem was and he told me that his friend came over once to download some porn and probably fucked his computer up. I was like, no shit, that's your problem. I told him I couldn't fix it without reformatting. I couldn't download anything from the internet nor was I able to run the fixed I brought on my flash drive. The virus was preventing it. I suggested I bring the CPU home and format it for him. He wasn't thrilled and said he'd have someone else take a look at it. By all means, fuck off.

So, we both left, and then I told my friend like wtf, this guy's weird. And as he was driving he's like 'Dude, did you see that?' and I'm like 'See what?'. He's like 'when you opened the browser, there was "gay anal sex" in the search bar history'. I'm like wtf! This guy's fucked. And we just jetted. Then he gave me 20 bucks just for the hassle of coming. Nice guy but as gay as a handbag full of rainbows.

What an creepy thing to happen for my first day 'on the job' lol

Well just informing you,
You could have went into Safe Mode With Networking to get the tools you needed :p. Safe Mode installs only necessary drivers along with allowing internet connection.

To see if it was a RAT or someone controlling the computer, you could of used Netstat via CMD.
I can give you tips. I do a lot of fixing and testing on free time.

I don't know how to use any of that but I guess you're right. His computer restarts by itself and he had a blue screen with a warning message on his desktop.

Here I shall explain Safe Mode to you. Here is a canned speech I made a while ago for users who could not run tools in Normal Bootup.

Hi,
My name is Disruption and I will be assisting you today.

Pre-Step:
Please boot into Safe Mode With Networking

Steps
  • Restart Computer
  • Upon Bootup, Rapidly tap F8
  • Select "Safe Mode With Networking"

Netstat Canned:
Hi (User),
I noticed some suspicious activity in your Running Processes. I would like to gather more information so I am going to need to do a few steps.

Pre-Step:
Please open the following items:
Command Prompts (Start/Run/cmd or Start/Accessories/Command Prompts)
Task Manager ( Right click taskbar;Start Task Manager)

Step1:
In this step we are going to be using a Netstat Command.

Steps of Usage:

* Type "netstat -a" into command prompts
* Leave this open until prompt to close

Step 2: While having Command Prompts Open, Please open Task Manager. Also once open, please click the tab "View" and click "select columns".
Mark the first thing "PID" aka Process Identifier.

Step 3: Now compare each by looking at the PID in Taskmanager and look at the information or Numbers after the local IP Address in Command Prompts and compare them.

In your next post please provide a picture with the TaskManager and Command prompt.
------------------------------

I will make a tutorial for it as well just for you :D

Let me rephrase that. I know how to get into safe mode as well as its advantages for troubleshooting but I'm just not savvy with it enough to use it someone's computer. Usually I play around with things before I do it for the first time on someone's PC.

But thanks for the info.

I don't really have any questions tbh. I'm just not familiar with safe mode.

Would you like me to explain it a bit to you? It would provide you with an extra tool in your arsenal.

You'd be wasting your time in all honesty. I'm like half of the people on the net, that being said, I learn best through Google-ing things myself and moving at my own pace.

That's how some of the best IT specialists began.
