Well, if you don't feel that you deserve the position then I think that the wise decision would be to step down.
Also, if you have a lot of stuff to worry about such as school and the like, then being a member of management on a swiftly growing site only adds to the stress.
My suggestion?

he is simply stepping down from his position of Management.
A reason to stay would be that you'll leave The Elite hanging.
That would put a load on him unless he already has someone else picked out.
