Text'nDrive App

So there's this app that I ran into on the iTunes store called Text’nDrive. For those of us with a habit of checking (or even worse, responding to) email while we drive, this app provides a hands-free solution where new messages are read to you and you can respond by voice.

My main concern with this app is that it promotes cell phone usage while driving when we're working our asses off trying to have less people do it. This argument can go both ways for the following reasons.

Yes, this app promotes dangerous driving circumstances but exactly how many people have stopped driving with their cell phones since the new law came out (in Canada, no idea about elsewhere, but here it's illegal unless you have a blue-tooth device). We've tried scaring people by warning them with a fine when they drive while talking on the phone but not many people have stopped doing it. I know this for a fact because I myself text and make phone calls while I drive.

Having said that, we tried stopping the problem at its roots, by trying to stop cell phone usage while driving altogether but that didn't go so well, from what I'm seeing. Therefore, this app could be viewed as a plus to those who refuse to change their stubborn ways.

Lastly, the benefit of this app is that its unlike any of its predecessors in the sense that the older versions of text and drive simulators used to attempt to convert your voice into text upon sending the message to someone while this app is all voice-based. Pro; hands free, fewer accidents, etc. Con; not so subtle when you're trying to be discrete while texting in class or on the bus.

Who do you guys think?

The only people that would go out of their way to text and drive are the ones who are already texting to begin with. This will decrease accidents.

I personally still text and drive, since I can text without looking at my keyboard my eyes are still on the road.

How can you text without looking at your phone without making tons of mistakes? What phone do you have?

I can text and drive without looking at my keyboard as well. I have the Samsung Intercept and just have gotten the feel for slide out keyboard.

Although, I often use the built in voice to text option that come preloaded in its messaging app. All I do is hit the little microphone button and speak then hit send.

I know I'm out of line to say this since I do it too but I'm trying to cut down.

People that drive and text simultaneously think that unlike most people, they're special and nothing bad could possibly happen to them. They're oblivious to the real dangers of taking their attention off of driving and it's sad. I can't say how many times, when someone has done something illegal/dangerous while driving, they were on their phone.

I hope they don't need to experience an accident to change their ways. It's really unfortunate.

So true, many times in the past I've nearly veered off of the road because I decided to read my messages (Which in all honesty, weren't even important). I've since cut back on that and just wait until I reach my destination before whipping out my phone. The bottom line is no message is worth losing your life or damaging your vehicle over.

Statistics could show that a high percentage of accidents involve cell phone usage (Yes, I know DUI/DWI is the highest percentage hands down!). While I don't find it necessary to even respond to messages any longer, I think this app should definitely cut down accidents.

True but its not only because of that. Most of the text messages that I just can't wait to read is because sometimes I'm making my way somewhere and if I think someone is calling to cancel or tell me to turn back, I don't want to go for nothing. And I've almost veered off the road too. But I do find checking my messages at a light a better alternative than waiting until you've reacher your destination. Sometimes I'll miss the light on purpose just so I can catchup on my texts.

You really have to think of it in a would you rather situation. If we are not using this application, there will be more texting while driving, vice versa if we do. The point is that there is no real way to stop someone from using their phone without drastically changing the laws. There is however an alternative, that being lessen the dangers of using a phone while driving.

And what changes are you referring to? What kind of laws do you think would scare people enough to make them stop doing it altogether?

well unless your driving in class or driving the bus I wouldn't be too worried lol. It's just an app you can still text normally.

I Don't see any problem with it, would it be compatible with bluetooths?

Good lord can you imagine riding around with your girlfriend, everything is quiet...then all of a sudden.
"New text from (Insert girl's name here), Hey last night was great, I hope your girlfriend doesn't find out."
