Egg.

Before there were chickens, there were other nonchicken species, which evolved to form the modern chicken. However, any changes to the nonchicken that evolved into a chicken had to occur in the zygote. Therefore, what probably happened is that two nonchickens mated and their zygote mutated into a chicken cell, and then multiplied. Eventually, a full chicken was ready to hatch. This means that the egg probably is the answer to the age-old question of which came first.

It has to be the egg, chicken's are a type of bird and as we all know all birds come from....EGGS! Now birds obviously changed due to evolution just like in england they're used to be white moths. Now they are a greyish color. The reason was the white moths were easy to spot and died off while the grey's Lived on. Same with the chicken it evolved and thrived! hope i didn't get to off track xD

Egg simply because the chicken we know today evolved from two non-chicken species.

Sometimes being so technical wont get you guys anywhere. I appreciate the literal answers and all but.. obviously the chicken represents the first organism (s). So really, none of you have truly answered the question at hand. Its hypothetical, but lets change it to..

What came first? The first animal or ___?

A chicken needs to be an egg before be born, but an egg needs to be put by a chicken...

I think the chicken was first because is imposible to be an egg without a chicken, but the chicken could be the first chicken born in the earth :)
