The Illuminati existed as a secret society that were secret to protect themselves from persecution by the Roman Catholic Church. The members were extremely intellectual and had a lot of respected philosophers and plausible thinkers. One of the original members of The Illuminati was Galileo Galilei, who proved that we rotated around the sun but the church stated that the sun rotated around us because the Earth was the centre of the whole universe. Even though he was right, they forced him to apostatise and was retained under house arrest for years on end. The church lost their power, approximately 200 years ago and then The Illuminati ceased to exist because Science could be trailed openly and there wasn't a need for any sort of secret society. Galileo was an adherent Roman Catholic. He died 200 years before the secret society was fabricated.
The Illuminati taking over the world would've happened decades ago if it was even going to happen at all -- it wasn't, because like the nonsense that is subliminally messaged, the whole thing was a spiteful rumour stated to the Church to degrade the Illuminati and to main their own reluctant existence. Rumours developed over time into conspiracy theories, the idea that the Illuminati still exist is melodramatic nonsense -- what goes with it is sustained by those who cultivate themselves. In a condensed form, the Illuminati were not corrupt nor destructive, they cease to prevail but they have been replaced by a number of deceitful beings who claim to be Illuminati for their own commercial welfare.
