Definitions of music on the Web

Different Genres

There are not only different genres of music, the genres even have their own sub genres.

Electronic
  • Ambient
    One of the most distinguished forms of Electronic Music. Flowing minimal structures, usually very atmospheric and relaxing. Sometimes with rhythms and/or sequences. Pioneered by Brian Eno and Harold Budd.
  • World Music
    Electronic Music with elements from different cultures of the world. (not New Age)
  • Electronic New Age
    On the very brink of the electronic world, this is the most commercial of the genres. It is debatable whether these artists belong to the Electronic Music world or are just part of the New Age scene. This music is characterized by a generally very light and uplifting atmosphere and is very 'sweet'. The emphasis is on melodies.

Country

  • alt-country
    Alternative country is a term used to describe a number of country music subgenres that tend to differ from mainstream or pop country music
  • Bluegrass
    is a form of American roots music, and is a sub-genre of country music. It has roots in Scottish, English, Welsh
  • Western
    Western music originated as a form of folk music. Originally composed by and about the people who settled and worked throughout the Western United States and Western Canada

Blues

  • Blues-rock
    Blues-rock is a hybrid musical genre combining bluesy improvisations over the 12-bar blues and extended boogie jams with rock and roll styles
  • Boogie-woogie
    an instrumental version of the blues (especially for piano)
  • Gospel blues
    Gospel blues is a form of blues-based gospel music that has been around since the inception of blues music, a combination of blues guitar and evangelistic lyrics.

Jazz

  • Acid Jazz
    Acid jazz is a musical genre that combines elements of jazz, funk and hip-hop, particularly looped beats
  • Dixieland
    An early style of jazz that was born in New Orleans. Several players play different melody lines at the same time
  • Latin Jazz
    A hybrid of jazz and Latin music

Rock and Pop

  • Classic Rock
    Classic rock was originally conceived as a radio station programming format which evolved from the album oriented rock (AOR) format in the early-1980s.
  • Metal
    Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s
  • Oldies
    A radio format that plays hit records from the 1950s to 1970s

Reggae

  • Dancehall
    Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music. A more sparse version of reggae it also speaks on politics and religion but not as direct as roots style
  • Dub
    One of the precursors of hip-hop, dub is a form of ska and reggae music out of 1960s Jamaica, characterized by an MC singing or rapping over a mostly instrumental “dub” or remix version of an existing recording.
  • Reggaeton
    Reggaeton is a form of dance music which blends Jamaican music influences of reggae and dancehall with those of Latin America

Rap and Hip-Hop

  • Free Style
    Freestyle rap commonly refers to rap lyrics which are improvised through acapella or with instrumental beats, i.e. performed with no previously composed lyrics, or "off the top of the head"
  • Old School
    Old school hip hop (occasionally referred to as Old Skool) describes the earliest commercially recorded hip hop music (1979–1984)
  • Turntablism
    Turntablism is the art of manipulating sounds and creating music using phonograph turntables or digital turntables and a DJ mixer


Classical

  • Early Music
    Early music is commonly defined as European classical music from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance
  • Classical Guitar
    The classical guitar is a plucked string instrument from the family of instruments called chordophones
  • Modern
    music contemporized with the present generations

I think metal should have it's own sub-genres. W/ Heavy Metal, Rock, Hard Rock etc etc

All up though - good work!

Nice thread. Thanks for posting all of this information. What about rock though? Things like metal, death metal, scremo, hardcore, etc. are common types of music that are not currently on your list. Nonetheless, great thread. Very informative! I took a quick read through and I thoroughly enjoyed doing so.
