First thing, there are still smokers because the tobacco market has never stopped producing and advertising one. People still buy products that are still there and ready for consumption. If the tobacco industry will no longer be available then perhaps, only a few will be most likely seen to smoke. However, that would be an idle strategic plan of cutting down tobacco industry knowing that most of the revenues will likely be going to the government and with that reason alone, tobacco industry will profit the government.
Second reason, nicotine is a substance along with tar and others that give the addictive nature of smoking. Though there are harmful effects in the long run, it is the temporary relief from tension, stress and boredom that keeps a smoker to keep on smoking.
Third, it makes a person looks cool and tough when he smokes. That is a certain psychological reason why most men smoke and maybe for women to be a little more different and above than the other usual girls.
Fourth, in some countries, smoking has not been given a great deal and laws about banning or giving penalty to those who smokes are still lenient. There is not enough implementing and imposing of the rules that is why there are still smokers who are rampant smokers even in a public vicinity or area(s).
Finally, there should be strong education given to adults, parents, and students and to the community as well, to stop smoking. Education is the still the key to allow these people to be aware about its dangers and health risks!
