Tumblr founder and CEO David Karp is in a new digital campaign for Uniqlo, the Japanese retailer.
Karp is featured along with dozens of other New Yorkers, including CoolHunting.com founder and editor-in-chief Josh Rubin and Interviews50cents founder Alex Chadwick, in a digital mosaic called NYC Voices. The campaign supports the opening of Uniqlo’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York, which opens this fall.
In a two-minute video, Karp explains what Tumblr is and how people use it. For example, he says that people in their fifties and sixties who are picking up a photography hobby for the first time can find a community on Tumblr where they can learn from others and share their own thoughts and photos. “That stuff really gets us excited,” says Karp.
Karp is the latest social media luminary to star in an ad campaign. Foursquare co-founders Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvaduai modeled for Gap last fall as did Alisa Leonard, director of strategy for iCrossing. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone also appeared in an ad for Stolichnaya Vodka last fall and Digg founder Kevin Rose helped launch Absolut SF, a San Francisco-themed extension, in June.
