Warning to members: New internet scam

I was watching the BBC news last night and heard about a new scam. An advertisement will popup that tells you to install this software to fix viruses, but infact it steals all your information. My advice is to only ever stick to anti virus software that is legitimate and well known, Google search the product name and do some research on it..

Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11754487

If you do get infected, run a scan with your Anti Virus / Anti Spyware software, AVG or avast! Anti Virus (both free) or Malware Bytes Anti Malware for Spyware

Be careful and stay safe!

Thanks.

Malware attacks like that have been around for a while, I knew a few back on XP, one of which took over the page you were viewing and displayed a faux mock-up of what looked like "My Computer" on XP, claiming to be searching your files and finding lots of viruses, and had a link to a program to help fix them.

You don't exactly need to download anything in order to be affected by them either, if they're convincing enough for a naive amateur internet user, they could do as much damage by getting you to allow a java signature to "fix your problems".

Cold-calling is something I haven't heard of though, seems like a pretty tedious way to infect people's computers if you ask me.

Its been around for a while. Me and my brother both clicked on one a while back. Even clicking the X button would start it up. You'll have to ctrl+alt+del and end the program through the task manager to keep it from starting up. At least, thats what I was told.

Those are very hard viruses/malware to get rid of. You won't be able to delete it that easy. From past expirences it keeps coming back.

I should also mention don't install neither those programs that say they can fix your computer errors because they can delete important files so as other files that are used to keep your computer running.

I say this as a own experience and I decided to share it.
My wireless does not work in the other computer so you can see that it is really messes up

Encountered this multiple times, just use your common sense and visit bad web pages, or accept downloads from pop-ups.

I believe that is a rogue antivirus correct me if I am wrong

It could be once installed.

The pop-up itself is a webpage disguised as a malware scanner, if you click either 'run scan', 'delete found malware', etc; it attempts to download and run malware to your PC.
Then you are infected.
