What do you think is the minium amount of RAM a computer should have these days?

For me it is 4 GB, it is enough to do pretty much everyday tasks (Facebook, youtube, reddit, netflix, light gaming, multi tasking etc,.) Anything below that needs upgrading.

As above, 8gb and no less.
You can hardly multitask with 4gb.

I agree; 4 GB of RAM is more than enough to perform day-to-day tasks involving social media including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc. You should be able to do some light gaming on a computer with 4 gigs, too - although gaming relies more on your graphics card than the RAM installed on your system.

My current computer only has 1 GB of RAM that's physically installed, with 1.5 GB of swap space. I'm able to surf the web and watch YouTube videos at 480p just fine. I am able to play some movies at 720p too, if I resize the VLC window properly. Playing video games and YouTube videos relies more on your graphics card though as I said.

I'm going to build my own PC very soon (tomorrow, Thursday or Friday but no later than that as I already have most of the parts I need, just waiting on the PSU to arrive). It will have 8 GB of RAM but that's primarily because I plan on gaming with it.

My new computer will have the following hardware specifications
  • Intel i5 4690K
  • MSI Z97S motherboard
  • MSI R9 270x
I'm going to use the 1 TB HDD and the 8 GB of RAM stick that I have in my old computer (not really old, but the CPU socket on the motherboard is fucked) in order to save money. The power supply is 700 watts, not a fancy efficiency.

So yeah

Truthfully, the speed of your pc and how quickly everything loads is based on your CPU. You can still play most brand new games with only 4gb of RAM. Example, Battlefield: Hardline only requires 4gb of RAM. Granted, to play it smoothly you'd need a pretty good CPU amd a fair amount of video memory to compensate for the lack of RAM but it can be done. Things like Facebook? You're gonna need about 2gb, really not a lot at all and that's probably an overestimate.

TL;DR You need like 4gb to be able to do almost anything.

~ 4GB is just fine for browsing, and 8GB for work. 16 GB for Gaming.

Just one stick? Is it dual-channel or single channel? If it dual, I would suggest you get an identical stick and use both.

Depending on what you are going to use the computer for.

If you are just doing emails, and watching YouTube videos, 2GB is plenty.

If you are doing stuff that requires a lot of power, then 4GB or higher.
