I was looking through a bunch of debates (since I haven't made a thread here in a while) and found this.
I propose these following options and nothing else. "Something is wrong because of autonomy, suffering, and intentions." So before you go on answer this first question in your mind. Out of these three reasons, which do you believe causes wrongness in the world?
If you don't know the definition(s) of the word(s), here they are.
AUTONOMY:
I propose these following options and nothing else. "Something is wrong because of autonomy, suffering, and intentions." So before you go on answer this first question in your mind. Out of these three reasons, which do you believe causes wrongness in the world?
If you don't know the definition(s) of the word(s), here they are.
- Autonomy
- "independence or freedom, as of the will or one's actions"
- Suffering
- to undergo or feel pain or distress
- Intentions
- an act or instance of determining mentally upon some action or result.
AUTONOMY:
- "Some would say something is wrong because it violates autonomy." For example, if the U.S. were to change the second amendment to, "No guns allowed except in wars." Many people that violates their autonomy because they believe people should have guns for their own safety. Another example is Hitler was took away the autonomy of the Jews, homosexuals, blacks, etc. Yet, people believe when their autonomy is violated it is better. For example, the North Koreans like when Kim Jong-Un violates their autonomy as it protects them from bad "western culture." So, something cannot be bad because it violates autonomy, as autonomy violation is not necessarily bad.
- Other people say something is wrong because it causes suffering. This is not my example and not my favorite. I will change it when I find a better when. "So, if the measure for the "wrongness" of something is how much unnecessary suffering it causes, then raping someone in a coma cannot be bad, yet no empathetic, sane individual would advocate that raping someone in a coma is not wrong. This means that the measure of "suffering caused" is arbitrary, or at least not 100% responsible for evaluating wrongness."
- The other people say intention is something for being wrong. Going back to my first examples, if this was true then the second amendment was not suppose to take the rights of people away. It was to protect them from the wrongdoing of people. My second example with the Hitler one. If you believe intentions make something wrong then Hitler WAS NOT EVIL. The reason I say that is because Hitler's INTENTION(s) were to make a world a better place and make the human race "better".
