What should I get?

I need a laptop; here are some requirements:

- Somewhat fast (Doesn't need to be lightning fast, but it shouldn't be super slow)
- I don't want a netbook, as they are way too slow, and don't have a CD slot.
- $400 - $500 (Or anything good for it's value)
- Using it for school (Not gonna do gaming or anything like that)

Suggestions? I'm actually serious, don't troll. Thanks.
