What's your definition of success?

My definition of success, is someone who has achieved something that is important to them. Or someone who has, against the odds, made a good life for themselves.

For example, I hate to use myself, but I dropped out of school when I was 16, I had no grades, nothing. I somehow blagged my way into college, and was kicked out a few months later. 10 years down the line, I work for a bank, on quite a tidy wage. To me, this is success.

Another example: A man takes a risk, invests his only £1000 into a small business, 5 years later, he's a millionaire. This is success.

What success is not: Being handed everything on a plate.

To be in better standing then where you have come from.
Shit, one time my teacher gave the best one line definition which stuck with me for a long time but I eventually forgot it D:

I have to disagree with this. If you were homeless, and spent your last £1 on the lottery and won, that isnt success.

Homeless people don't have the right to be successful? Homeless people have lives too.

You probably assumed the homeless man was on the streets through alcoholism or drugs, but what if the person became homeless because the company he worked for went bust and laid everyone off and he couldn't pay his bills?

You have totally misinterpreted what I meant.

I was implying that for it to be classed as success, it must be earnt. Winning the lottery isnt fucking success, its having shit given to you on a plate.

If that homeless man, spent the £1 on.. I dont know, some glass cleaner and a squeegy, and cleaned windows, and turned that into £100, and then invested again etc, and THEN became a millionaire, THAT is success.

I like that phrase, Wiggles.

Success is to work hard to achieve something you want even against the odds and be happy about it.

I also think success has to be to do with happiness. It's surprising to see money as such a big factor.

It is for most people but exceptions are always good to know.
I know a guy who owned a a cargo company, he had some trucks and did pretty good. but he didn't like it.
He sold everything and went to Hawaii, where he now lives in a 3x5 shack, and surfs every day.
He's more happy than he's ever been though.

Him and my father are going to write a book about it. :)

Success has different meanings for each of us:
  • For one person it could be a a general sense of happiness.
  • Another might think of success as meaning making a lot of money and accumulating wealth.
  • A third person might just see it as find a special lover or soulmate.
My definition of success is that true success is different for each of us and cannot be defined.

To me, it seems the the definition of success is personal.

Everyone seems to have there own views upon it, which all have valid statements to back them.

Success.. is achieving something you aimed for and worked hard for, not just luck and all that. Can be in terms of career, education, or achieving something as simple as being able to someone who is seriously in need..
