So I'm currently paying $80/month for my internet package. I'm supposed to be receiving 55mbps.

These are the said features:
1 MP3 (about 0.78 sec)
1 Standard Movie (about 2.55 min)
1 HD Movie (about 6.5 min)
Download speed up to: 55 Mbps
&
Up to 51,200 MP3
Or up to 250 Standard Movies
Or up to 100 HD Movies
Monthly transfer capacity: 250 GB

I'm running four computers. 3 wireless and 1 Ethernet. All four suck, even the one connected directly to my router. I'm getting about 100kb/s download speed if I'm lucky and takes me almost 12 hours to download a 4GB file. Two computers have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and the two others have Windows XP Professional 32-bit w/ SP3

My current router is D-Link WBR-2310 HW Version: B1 FW Version: 2.03

are there any recommended setting for this specific router?

It's so bad that I can barely even play Runescape anymore without disconnecting every 30 seconds.

Same with me: when my dad watches online movies and uses the attached cable from the router, my runescape ping jumps from 30-40 to 100-200. This is sh*t, because only two people are sharing from one provider.

This is even happening when I'm the only person using a computer in my house. Although it is substantially worse when someone is watching even a simple video on YOUTUBE..

Try getting a new router. There is no reason you should still be using a wireless G router (assuming you don't have outdated wireless cards that don't support wireless N). You can find a cheap wireless N router for around $40, but it would be better to get like an $80-100. Make sure it supports up to 300Mbs transfer rate.

I've never been one to understand all of these things w/ routers and shit so thank you for your response. It does make sense and I'll go grab a new router next time I get paid.

What is your preferred maker of routers? Belkin, D-Link, Linksys, etc..

I have always preferred Netgear.

Have you tried calling the ISP? I'm pretty sure you can ask for a router change.

Someone told me that x amount of original speed is split y ways... my remedy was to skip the wireless and plug the cord directly into my pc

Edit: Which was before my dad started to stream movies..

They claimed I'd get a wireless router from THEM, but that's not the case. They still refuse to give me one.

Meh same concept with me, speedtest claims I get 10MB/s download speed yet the highest I've ever downloaded something was like 1.2MB/s, but I do have a shitty router so that could be it.

Your speed of downloading files will depend completely on how fast the server you're downloading it from is. If you only get 400kb/s it will max out at 400kb/s but even if you have 1 GB/s and the server can only send you 1mb/s you will get 1mb/s.

Yes I understand this but I've downloaded plenty of games off steam and some of my mates tell me they get like 20mb/s+ download speed while I get barely 1.2mb/s

I'd suggest calling your ISP cuz there's no way it should be like that.. Who is your provider?

A lot of people don't know the difference Megabytes and Megabites. I am not going to explain so go google. Anyways, speedtest shows your download speed in Mb (Megabite), but when you actually download something, the speed will be in MB (Megabyte). You can check your MB/s by dividing Mb/s by 8.
