Words cannot describe how much of a facepalm that comment was. They're the people giving clearance for landing and lift-off of planes, as well as assigning each incoming and outgoing to a specific runway etc. etc..

There's more than one air traffic controller, if one guy wants to be a dick and not do his job, they'll pull him off and get somebody competent to do it, after 9/11 the U.S. doesn't mess around in airports. I'm not sure if it's illegal though, but you are endangering lives.

Yeah they get paid a fair amount. That is offset by the high stress of their job though.
