Atheism

Note, before I start, this isn't directed at anyone here, nor is it meant to flame Atheism.

Alright, here we go...

Why is it that some Atheists get this idea that they are superior to people who aren't, that religion is for the weak minded, that religion is inferior?

And another thing I wanted to mention, why is it that when some people say things against Atheists, they say "don't judge an entire group on a small group of people." and whatnot, but a lot of the time, I see Atheists doing the exact same thing, judging religion based on extremists, such as the Westboro Baptist group. Isn't that a bit hypocritical?

Anyways, I'm just going to be reading the replies to this, I wont be replying to anyone, simply because I don't have the time, in the end, it comes down to "I have my beliefs, you have yours, I wont change yours, you wont change mine".

I tried to be Catholic, but by that time I was smart enough to see how illogical religion is. Religion unfortunately targets children and turns them into life time extremists.
I beg to differ, when I was a child, my mother taught me to be open-minded and that I have freedom to chose which religion I follow. Maybe some parents are different, I don't believe religion should be forced upon a child, let the child learn about it, and decide if he wants to follow, and accept the religion.

Your lucky, the only religious friends I have are only religious because their father is a preacher.

Once you realize how illogical, false, manipulative, and destructive religion is, you will understand why we are atheists. I believe that everyone feels that they are superior to everyone else, and that they know more. That is just a natural way of thinking.

I judge religion based on the fact that none of it is true, in my opinion. If I believe you are wrong, then I will judge your beliefs accordingly. Am I supposed to accept religious beliefs as true? Why should I not state my point of view, just because you don't agree with it? I judge all religions the same; they are wrong. The actions of religious people had very little influence on my decision to become an atheist. What did have an influence was the outwrite falseness of the Bible, Qu'ran, etc.

As a side note, the Westboro Bapist Church isn't a group of extremists; they are just doing what the Bible tells them to do.

Again, all that is a matter of opinion, it's your opinion to believe it is false, just like it's my opinion to believe the Bible is true. I never said you couldn't state your point.

As a side note, the Westboro Bapist Church isn't a group of extremists; they are just doing what the Bible tells them to do.
What they are doing is in an extremist type, the Bible doesn't say to protest soldier's funerals and cause turmoil for the soldier's family.

It's not an opinion. From the evidence available to our generation, I see no logical or sound reason to believe anything said in the Bible.

They are upholding the ideals an principals set forth by the Bible. How does this mean that they are extremists?

They are doing it in an extremist type fashion. Does the Bible say to protest funerals? No, does the WBC group do that though? Yes, because why? They are extremists.

The Bible says several things against violence, murder, etc. The WBC takes the ideals from the Bible, and puts them into action, such as the whole "God Hates Fags" thing. And according to the Bible, God does hate gay people. They are the only true Christians; you're probably not as Christian as you think. I am in no way saying that they are good people or that their actions are justified, because I do not believe in the Bible.

I am in no way being a supporter of the Bible here, nor do I wish to be condoned as such, but I have one question. Where in the Bible does it say that "God hates fags," or where does it at least subliminally hint at it? I've not read too much of the Bible before, nor do I wish to in the future, but I'd like to know if you can direct me to where you based your remarks off of.

Leviticus 18:22
"Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin."

Leviticus 20:13
"If a man practices homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman, both men have committed a detestable act. They must both be put to death, for they are guilty of a capital offense."

Genesis 19:1-11
The story of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Jude 7
And don't forget Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, which were filled with immorality and every kind of sexual perversion. Those cities were destroyed by fire and serve as a warning of the eternal fire of God's judgment.

There are more, I'd just have to do some more research to find them.

Thank you for making me aware of these references. I did not mean to say that I didn't think they were in the Bible, but meant to express that I was unsure of where I could find them.

EDIT: This passage just put a completely different spin on how I view Christianity. I'm very glad you've pointed this out.

They overcame indoctrination, brainwashing. They're bound to feel egotistical. As for those who weren't indoctrinated, they can see vividly see the malarkey, hence making them feel smarter in comparison, that's what's to be expected.

All religion is suppose to be what we label extremism, so no.

I will try to answer your questions. Im speaking on my own behalf.

1. Why is it that some Atheists get this idea that they are superior to people who aren't, that religion is for the weak minded, that religion is inferior?

Answer: Most atheists have derived their belief, or rather non-belief of god through logic and reason. When it comes to analytical and critical thinking, logic and reason are required virtues. Some of the most intelligent people to have ever lived were atheists. I think atheists tend to be more honest, logical, rational and knowledgeable. Those very traits are what has led them to be atheists. Otherwise, they would base their life off of faith, which is by definition believing in something without logical proof or material evidence. Why anyone would choose faith over physical proof is beyond my understanding. If I had to guess, I would say it is because they were brainwashed and indoctrinated as children, thus I am the superior thinker because I thought beyond what I was taught. Many atheists are understanding about this, they know that you were manipulated as a child, before your brain had developed the ability to think logically. So we try to explain this to you, because we went through the same thing you did and beat it. We did the research, we read the bible, and we came to the conclusion that it simply doesnt make sense. You arent considered inferior for believing in god, you're considered a victim of the system.

Lets not forget that we are all born atheists. It is not until we are manipulated as children that we attain a belief in god. Very rarely do people make that personal choice on their own without some sort of influence. Keep in mind that you are an atheist right now. Lets say you are a christian who believes in the god of the bible. There are THOUSANDS of other gods you could worship, but you dont believe in them, thus making you an atheist to all of those gods. Ask yourself, why do I believe in my god, but not any of the others? There is no more proof that your god exists than there is that the tooth fairy exists. That is a fact. Your geography plays a huge role, for example had you been born in the Middle East you would most likely believe in Allah. But you werent born in the Middle East, so you think Allah doesnt exist.

2. Every group has its extremists that tarnish the label. Labels are stupid anyhow. I will say that I commend the Westboro Baptist Church for being true christians. They behave in the manor that is asked of them in the bible. They are more christian than your sweet grandmother who would never harm a soul. The bible is FILLED with violent, hateful scripture. Not only does god tolerate, he demands rape, murder, slavery, genocide and famine. Dont believe me? Read the bible. I can show you some verses if you would like. By gods standards, the people of the Westboro Baptist Church are purest christians on Earth.

I hope this helps. The truth is a hard pill to swallow.

The things that some of the Atheist's believe is a conundrum. Because Atheism is the belief (Keyword) that God does not exist. The very fact that they believe means that they are a religion. Saying atheism isn't a religion isn't correct.

Atheism is not the proposition that God does not exist. It's the lack of belief in a God. It's the rejection of a faith-based proposition. Therefore, not a religion.

But even if you reject faith-based proposition, it basically translates to a disbelief of God.

Wikipedia said:
Religion is an organized collection of beliefs, cultural systems, and world views that relate humanity to an order of existence.

No it doesn't. Disbelief implies there's evidence and atheists are in denial. However, there is no evidence of a god. Disbelief is an erroneous word. Lack of belief is more accurate.

Atheism doesn't fall under those standards for a religion: for it isn't an organized collection of beliefs, it's a singular lack of belief in a faith-based proposition.

Ok, well, I can't say anything about that argument. I see your point. But I guess even still, If its not organized collection of beliefs, if anything its an organized collection of disbelief's. So what does that make it?
