Do I really need a SSD?

I'm not actually sure if you should or not, but if I was going to buy a SSD I would buy a small one, like 40gb or something like that, install Windows on it and the main programs I use, Firefox, Microsoft Office, Skype, etc.

Why on earth would you go with 40 GB SSD. OS it self takes 11GB. Go with 60GB intel 330 SSD for $60
