Same but what you have to do before you jailbreak is you need to do a restore or update with iTunes, not a WiFi update (one done from the settings on your iDevice).

It should work after that.

I did this but what's the point? I can't seem to get anything to work, not even any themes with winterboard

I actually have no idea why it is that's just what they said. I restored using iTunes and Jailbroke again and it works.
